The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr Kehinde Longe, has successfully mediated a peace agreement between the Chief Imam of the Kamaudeen Mosque, Osogbo, Alhaji Kasim Yunis, and the custodian of a masquerade, Chief Kayode Esuleke. This initiative comes as the annual Egungun masquerade is scheduled to take place in the town.

According to a statement released in Osogbo and signed by the police command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, both men have agreed to promote peace during the festival. The meeting, which resulted in the agreement, was organized at the behest of the Commissioner of Police.

In the past, there have been dangerous clashes between members of the Kamaudeen Mosque and the followers of the Esuleke masquerade.

The most recent incident occurred on Sunday, June 27, 2021, resulting in the death of one mosque member and injuries to nine others.

To prevent a reoccurrence, Longe, who harped on the need to embrace peace at the meeting, also warned that the command would not condone any act that could lead to a breach of public peace.

The statement further read, “The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, Patrick K. Longe, held a strategic security meeting with the masquerade custodian, Pa Esuleke, and the Chief Imam of the Kamaudeen Mosque, Oke Baale, Osogbo, Alhaji Kasim Yunis.

“CP restated that he will not condone anything that will cause the breach of peace in anyway.
