The Oyo State Government has launched an investigation into a stampede that occurred during a carnival in Ibadan, the state capital, where several children reportedly lost their lives.
Governor Seyi Makinde extended his condolences to grieving parents, pledging that those responsible would face justice.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the governor confirmed the arrest of the event organisers and assured the public of thorough accountability.
“While investigations are ongoing, the primary organisers of the event that led to this stampede have been taken into custody,” Makinde stated.
“I want to reassure our people that anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable. Please remain calm as the security agencies investigate this unfortunate incident.
“Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
Although the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, videos circulating online showed distressed scenes involving children affected by the stampede at the Bashorun area of Ibadan.
Describing the incident as a tragic day for Oyo State, Governor Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries sustained.
“Earlier today, an incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, the venue of an event organised for families. Sadly, a stampede at the venue has led to multiple loss of lives and injuries.
“This is a very sad day for us here in Oyo State. We sympathise with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths,” he said.
To prevent further harm, the state government has deployed security personnel to restore order at the venue. Ambulances and medical teams have also been mobilised to provide necessary care.
Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring safety and promised to take all necessary measures to secure the area.
