Paraguayan President Santiago Peña is in stable condition after being hospitalized during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
According to a statement from Rio’s Samaritano Hospital, Peña was admitted on Monday afternoon following reports of “discomfort” and underwent several tests. The hospital assured that his condition remains stable.
“He is doing well, he’s being observed and waiting for results,” Paraguay’s first lady, Leticia Ocampos, said on social media.
Earlier, Vice President Pedro Alliana shared on social media that he had spoken with President Santiago Peña, who experienced a “slight indisposition.”
Peña, a 46-year-old economist from Paraguay’s conservative Colorado Party, assumed office in August 2023. He was participating in the G20 summit in Brazil when he fell unwell.
Shortly before his hospitalization, Peña posted on social media about discussions with global leaders on pressing international challenges. He also shared photos of himself alongside leaders from Qatar and Nigeria at the summit.
