The LAFIA Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Nasarawa State Chapter, on Monday took the step of closing down the state House of Assembly. They did this in solidarity with the nationwide strike aimed at advocating for financial autonomy for state legislatures throughout the country.
The union’s chairman, Suleiman Oshafu, stated during a press briefing in Lafia that the strike is comprehensive. He also urged the governor of Nasarawa State to promptly enforce financial autonomy for State Houses of Assemblies.
“We today embark on strike over financial autonomy for the State Houses of Assemblies among other things demanding for the full financial autonomy of state House of Assembly. promotion of accountability, transparency, and good governance” he said
Oshafu pointed out that President Muhammadu Buhari signed an Executive order for the financial autonomy of state assemblies over the past three years. He emphasized that the association’s primary demand from the government is full financial autonomy for all state legislatures.
He urged the association’s members to remain at home until they receive further instructions from the national leadership of the organization.
“I call on all PASAN members to comply with the strike and be law-abiding, ” he said.
It’s worth noting that members of the association held placards bearing various inscriptions, financial autonomy is constitutional, Give us our financial autonomy now, No Autonomy, no legislator and no work, autonomy is the only solution to vibrant legislation among others.
