Passengers stranded as aviation unions commence two-day warning strike

Nigeria’s aviation industry has been disrupted, leaving many travellers stranded as the aviation unions begin their two-day warning strike today.

Many travellers are stranded because union members have blocked the entrance to the domestic terminal at Murtala Muhammad Airport.

This comes after a meeting that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority called that resulted in a deadlock since the unions insisted on carrying out the strike.

The conference, which was arranged by Capt. Musa Nuhu, Director-General of Civil Aviation, was attended by union representatives and was intended to persuade the unions to call off their two-day warning strike.

Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, the Ministry of Aviation’s Permanent Secretary, also attended the meeting.

The National Union of Air Transport Employees, Nigerian Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, and Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals are the unions that make up this group.

They are promoting the implementation of the conditions of service that were agreed upon with the aviation agencies’ workers, among other things, and requesting that the planned demolition of the Lagos headquarters of aviation agencies be stopped.

The Deputy General Secretary of ATSSSAN, Comrade Frances Akinjole in a short interview last night after the meeting said, “As I am talking to you, nothing has changed. If you don’t hear anything from the General Secretary, the strike continues.”

He later followed up with a text message, saying, “The strike goes as planned.”

Security operatives, including police and military officers, are on the ground as the unions sing solidarity songs.
