The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed Umar Damagum as the party’s substantive National Chairman.
The decision came on Monday during the PDP’s 102nd NEC meeting in Abuja. Proceedings were briefly halted for Damagum’s swearing-in, conducted by the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade.
In his acceptance speech, Damagum expressed gratitude to members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for easing his duties and to NEC members for recognising his efforts in repositioning the party.
Damagum, who had served as the PDP National Deputy Chairman (North), became acting national chairman in March 2023 following the suspension of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, a decision later upheld by the courts.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the NEC said Damagum’s confirmation reflected the committee’s appreciation of the NWC’s role in stabilising the party under his leadership.
“NEC hereby ratifies and confirms the appointment of Umar Damagum as the substantive national chairman of the party with effect from today, Monday, 25 August 2025, until the national convention holding in Ibadan, Oyo State, on 15 and 16 November 2025,” the communiqué stated.
