PDP united, coalition not a threat- Makinde

As efforts intensify to strengthen the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) across the South-West, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the PDP is an established institution not threatened by talk of any coalition.

Makinde asserted that the party remains united and undivided in the South-West geopolitical zone.

He stated that PDP leaders in the region have resolved to stay in the party and confront challenges responsibly. According to him, the PDP will resolve its internal issues and emerge stronger as the only credible political alternative for Nigerians.

The governor made these remarks on Friday while addressing journalists after a South-West PDP Caucus meeting held at the party’s Zonal Secretariat.

“We want the world to know that the South-West PDP is united. The proposed coalition poses no threat to us,” Makinde said.

“Who are these coalition members? They were previously in the PDP or APC. What are their records? Do they genuinely offer anything new or improved for the people? These are the questions we must ask.

“This Soji Adagunodo House belongs to the PDP South-West. If the roof leaks, will we, as leaders, abandon it? No. We will remain here and fix it. That is how responsible leadership works. We’re committed to our people’s welfare.”

Makinde affirmed that the PDP has established mechanisms to manage its affairs. “We will address issues when the time comes, and I assure you we will manage them effectively,” he added.

Earlier, the meeting—which included Osun State Governor Nurudeen Adeleke (represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi), former Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, and other prominent leaders—issued a communiqué distancing the party from the proposed coalition.

The communiqué reaffirmed the leaders’ loyalty to the PDP and their commitment to the unity, progress, and stability of the party across the region and country. It also expressed support for the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), stating that the PDP remains open to collaborating with like-minded citizens determined to rescue Nigeria from the APC’s grip.

The Caucus praised Governors Makinde and Adeleke, along with other regional leaders, for their tireless efforts to stabilise and grow the party. It stated:
“The PDP in the South-West remains intact. We urge all party structures to remain focused and work diligently towards a successful National Convention to further reposition the party.”

The communiqué also outlined plans to intensify efforts for victories in the upcoming by-elections in Oyo and Ogun states, as well as local council polls in Lagos.

The Caucus demanded the immediate release of Osun State’s withheld local government allocations by the Federal Government, describing the action as unconstitutional and a violation of citizens’ rights.

It also voiced deep concern over worsening insecurity and economic hardship under the APC administration. Echoing Governor Makinde’s stance, it emphasised that the 2027 elections would pit Nigerians against the APC—with the PDP ultimately prevailing.

Finally, the Caucus lauded Governors Makinde and Adeleke for their people-centred leadership and urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue supporting the PDP as the party works to rescue the nation.
