The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Folajimi Oyekunle, has won the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election in Oyo State.

Oyekunle polled 18,404 votes to defeat his closest rival, Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 8,312.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Abiodun Oluwadare, announced the results on Sunday at the Ibadan North Collation Centre, Ikolaba High School.

Other candidates trailed far behind: Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 88 votes; Olabisi Olajumoke of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) got 40; while Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) managed 18.

With the victory, Oyekunle fills the vacant seat left by Olaide Akinremi of the APC, who died on July 10. Akinremi was a ranking lawmaker and chairman of the House committee on science and research.

Following the declaration, PDP supporters across Oyo State celebrated Oyekunle’s win, describing it as a boost for the party ahead of future contests.
