Pedestrian killed, passenger injured in Lagos auto crash

A commercial bus driver crashed into two other buses in the Ketu area of Lagos State, killing one and injuring another.

The multiple-car crash occurred on Tuesday.

“A commercial Toyota Hiase Bus (NSW 216 XA) fully loaded with pepper and other perishable items early this morning rammed into two other Volkswagen commercial buses and killed a pedestrian (male) at Ketu by Demuri Junction inward Kosofe, Lagos,” the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said in a statement.

The incident happened around 6:45 am. LASTMA said preliminary probe showed that the the Hiase bus, fully loaded with perishable goods, lost control while on high speed owing to brake failure.

It said the pedestrain was waiting to board a bus at Ketu Bus Stop by Demurin Junction along Ikorodu Road.

“Another trapped female passenger inside one of the Volkswagen commercial bus was rescued by LASTMA personnel and immediately handed over to Officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASMBUS). While the commercial bus driver was immediately approhended by LASTMA personnel, Police men from Alapere Police Station provided security backup during the rescue operations,” LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department Adebayo Taofiq said.

In the wake of the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki appealed to pedestrians to always stay at government designated bus stops to board commercial buses.

But he also cautioned drivers against overspeeding and ensure their vehicles are in the right state before hitting the roads.
