The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has claimed his life is under threat following his New Year critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Obi’s claim comes after remarks by the All Progressives Congress (APC) national spokesperson, Felix Morka, who allegedly stated in an interview, “Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and has it coming to him whatever he gets.”
During his New Year press conference on Thursday, Obi decried the worsening state of Nigeria’s political, economic, and security conditions. He criticised the government’s claims of progress, highlighting increased poverty, declining GDP, and worsening living conditions over the past 18 months.
Reacting on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Obi questioned Morka’s statement, asking if he had truly “crossed the line” and inviting anyone to point out where he had done so. He reaffirmed his commitment to truth and decorum despite receiving threats against himself, his family, and associates.
Obi accused the current administration of fostering authoritarianism and suppressing free speech, vowing not to be silenced in his efforts to speak out against undemocratic practices.
“Our nation is drifting towards an authoritarian and repressive regime where freedom of expression is systematically suppressed. May God help us create a better and freer society for the sake of our children,” Obi stated.
