A petrol tanker burst into flames on Thursday while unloading fuel at a filling station in Kiyawa Local Government Area, Jigawa State, Northwest Nigeria.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire started when someone answered a phone call near the tanker, igniting the highly flammable vapors.

The blaze rapidly consumed the tanker and a section of the filling station.

Fortunately, the swift response of firefighters and local residents prevented the fire from spreading further.

Authorities confirmed there were no casualties, though the extent of property damage is yet to be assessed.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the incident and prevent a recurrence.

Last Saturday, a petrol-laden tanker exploded along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, claiming the lives of at least 11 people.

Reports indicate that the tanker experienced brake failure, overturned, and spilled its contents, which subsequently ignited into a devastating explosion.

Earlier, on January 18, 2025, a similar tragedy occurred in Niger State, where a fallen tanker led to an explosion that killed no fewer than 86 people and left 55 others injured as they attempted to scoop fuel.

Earlier in January 2025, at least five persons were killed when a tanker ladened with petrol lost control and burst into flames in the Agbor area of Delta State.

In October 2024, a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State killed more than 170 people, with scores injured.
