President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday announced that the deceased military personnel in Okuama, a community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, will receive national honors. During the Ramadan fast breaking event in Abuja on Wednesday, alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and other House leaders, the President highlighted the importance of oversight in ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. However, he cautioned against excessive summoning of officials, noting its potential to disrupt operations and impede service delivery to citizens. Speaking to the attendees, the Commander-in-Chief extended condolences to the military and the families of the deceased, assuring them of a dignified burial for the victims. He urged lawmakers to exercise discretion in their oversight duties. “The baby step being taken by our country is doing well. The sacrifices we have made and we ask the people to continue to make, assuring them that there is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel. “All you have to do is to have faith. Pls don’t forget your constituencies, remember what they are going through. We salute all our men and women in uniform and we sympathise with them. “I will soon make further pronouncements. They must have a befitting burial and they must have national honour.” He expressed trust in the National Assembly’s capacity to uphold good governance, praising the positive rapport between the executive and the legislature. Tinubu noted that this harmonious collaboration had led to the swift passage of numerous bills aimed at enhancing the welfare of Nigerians. Furthermore, the President encouraged legislators not to overlook their constituencies and suggested leveraging the holy month of Ramadan as an opportunity to demonstrate compassion and provide assistance to the less fortunate in society.
Delta Gov Meets Tinubu
Concerned about potential military reprisals and the escalating tension following the brutal killing, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori held a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on the same day. Oborevwori stated that military authorities have provided assurances regarding the safety of the community’s residents.
Tinubu Pledges Punishment
President Tinubu who earlier condemned the killing, said the perpetrators, whom he described as “cowardly” must not go unpunished. In a message he released Sunday evening, said the killing is “unprovoked” and “dreadful”. “As the Commander-in-Chief, I join all well-meaning Nigerians and the men and women of our armed forces to mourn and express my profound grief over the needless death of our gallant soldiers,” Tinubu said. “I extend my profound condolences to the families of these fallen soldiers, their colleagues, and their loved ones. The military high command is already responding to this incident. The cowardly offenders responsible for this heinous crime will not go unpunished.”
