The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division/Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH), Major General AE Abubakar, on Saturday inaugurated the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja (MAL) Recreational Park at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State.

The Nigerian Army, in a statement shared on its X handle, revealed that the park is dedicated to Mrs. Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, the immediate past President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA). The dedication honors her remarkable contributions to the welfare of officers, soldiers, and their families, particularly within the 3 Division.

The recreational park offers a wide range of amenities aimed at enriching the lives of the barracks community. These include a sparkling swimming pool, a modern 5-a-side synthetic football pitch, and various recreational equipment such as trampolines, bouncy castles, electric merry-go-round trains, bicycles, swings, and battery-powered bikes. Additionally, the entire facility is equipped with floodlights, enabling families to enjoy the amenities both during the day and at night.

During the inauguration ceremony, Major General Abubakar highlighted the park’s significance in fostering community spirit, promoting physical activity, and providing relaxation and entertainment for military personnel and their families. He encouraged the barracks community to take full advantage of the facilities provided.

He also emphasized the necessity of the park, noting that the closest comparable recreational facility is over a 30-minute drive away. This makes the new park a timely addition to enhance family bonding and relaxation within the cantonment.

The event also celebrated the legacy of the late Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, whose contributions to the military and the Plateau State community continue to leave a lasting impact.

“We remember Gen Lagbaja not only for his service but for his belief in the importance of community and welfare. This facility serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy,” the General Officer Commanding stated.

“This park is not just a place for recreation; it is a vital component of our commitment to enhancing the well-being of our soldiers and their families. I encourage everyone to take full advantage of this wonderful facility and to create lasting memories here,” said Major General Abubakar.
