Waidi Shaibu, chief of army staff (COAS), on Tuesday paid courtesy visits to former heads of state Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as Umaru Bago, governor of Niger state.

In a statement, Appolonia Anele, acting director of army public relations, said the engagements were intended to reaffirm the Nigerian Army’s resolve to achieve operational excellence, enhance security, and strengthen collaboration with state governments and national leaders.

According to the statement, the COAS said the army is intensifying efforts to improve training, doctrine, and operational preparedness across its formations, noting that training institutions are currently conducting exercises to ensure personnel receive practical, mission-focused instruction.

He explained that the exercises are being used to assess the operational readiness of combat units and to identify gaps that may necessitate the deployment of additional troops or the creation of new formations.

Speaking on the strategic significance of Niger state, Shaibu said the army is pooling resources and deploying technology to confront security threats, stressing that the state’s expansive land area makes it vital to national security.

“Niger state holds a special place in our history. I have previously served here as a training and doctrine commander, and many of my colleagues also share a deep connection with this state. It is, in many ways, regarded as home,” he said.

The army chief also disclosed that he visited the 31st, 11th and 18th brigades in Bida to review operational shortfalls and to provide resources aimed at addressing recent security challenges in the state.

In separate remarks, Babangida and Abdulsalami congratulated Shaibu on his appointment and praised his commitment and leadership.

They also offered prayers for divine wisdom and courage for the COAS as he leads the army amid prevailing security concerns.

Meanwhile, Bago welcomed the COAS and commended the Nigerian Army for its support in addressing security issues nationwide.

Represented by his deputy, Yakubu Garba, the governor expressed optimism that sustained cooperation between Niger state and the army would help restore peace and stability.

“We are confident that, with the partnership of the Nigerian Army, we will overcome current challenges and protect lives and communities,” Bago said.
