A potential tanker fire disaster was narrowly avoided in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, thanks to the prompt intervention of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency.
The agency responded swiftly to an emergency call from the Eleyele area on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, following a tanker accident near AIB Filling Station.
According to a statement signed by the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Akinyemi Akinyinka, a trailer tanker with registration number T21044LA (Lagos), carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), veered off the road into a ditch, leading to a significant fuel spill.
“The emergency call was received at exactly 20:45hrs on Tuesday, 29th July, 2025, through a telephone call by one Mrs Mary about the truck accident at the above address.
“Immediately the address was taken, a crew of firemen led by CFS Olayiwola promptly deployed to the scene of the incident, and on getting there, it was a trailer tanker with regd. No. T21044LA (LAGOS), loaded with 45,000 litres capacity of petroleum motor spirit (PMS), swerved off the road into a nearby ditch and content gushing out profusely.
“The firemen quickly swung into action and by applying chemical foam compound to dampen the flammable liquid from catching naked fire from surrounding,” the statement read.
Akinyinka confirmed that the tanker has been safely removed, normal traffic flow restored, and daily activities have resumed in the area without disruption.
The incident response was a coordinated effort involving officers from the Eleyele Police Command Headquarters, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Amotekun Corps, who supported the fire service in preventing what could have been a catastrophic event.
This occurrence follows other recent tanker-related incidents in Ibadan. On July 17, 2025, a petrol tanker carrying 33,000 litres of fuel exploded at Celica Junction, Adegbayi, along New Ife Road after colliding with two vehicles. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to a nearby NNPC filling station. No casualties were recorded.
Similarly, on April 12, 2025, another tanker explosion occurred at the Tollgate area of the Lagos/Ibadan Motorway, damaging several vehicles and properties along Lead City University Road. Once again, fire officials acted promptly to manage the situation.
