The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has commenced an investigation into the fire that destroyed a cluster of makeshift residential structures in the Abule Oja area of Yaba.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said no casualties were recorded due to the swift response of emergency agencies.
The fire occurred at 9/10 Abudu Street, Abule Oja, near UNILAG Road, prompting the deployment of emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, UNILAG Fire Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force and LASEMA officials.
According to the agency, the highly combustible nature of the makeshift structures allowed the flames to spread rapidly. However, coordinated firefighting efforts prevented the blaze from reaching nearby buildings, including an adjoining two-storey structure.
Emergency responders also carried out damping-down operations to extinguish lingering hotspots and secure the area against a possible re-ignition.
Oke-Osanyintolu said a comprehensive damage assessment was ongoing, while relevant government agencies had been mobilised to provide relief materials and humanitarian assistance to affected residents.
He added that the cause of the fire had yet to be determined, with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service leading investigations in collaboration with other relevant agencies.
