Ghana’s President-Elect, John Dramani Mahama, paid a courtesy visit to Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Mahama, who secured victory in Ghana’s recent presidential election with 56 percent of the vote, was warmly welcomed by President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
His victory marked a remarkable political comeback, as he defeated the ruling party’s candidate, Ghana’s current Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia, who secured 41 percent of the vote.
Mahama’s triumph ends eight years of New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership under President Nana Akufo-Addo. Akufo-Addo’s administration faced Ghana’s worst economic crisis in decades, characterized by a debt default and an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.
The courtesy visit offered a platform for the two West African leaders to discuss regional collaboration, bilateral relations, and common challenges within the sub-region.
