An early Wednesday morning fire outbreak at Apongbon market has caused panic among road users and motorists around the area in Lagos.
Many shops, which were mostly made of planks, were destroyed in the fire.
Vehicles parked beneath the bridge were apparently destroyed by the inferno that engulfed a large section of the bridge.
The fire outbreak led to a gridlock on the Eko and Carter Bridge.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) warned via Twitter that the fire outbreak had slowed traffic and encouraged motorists to take alternate routes.
“Motorists who are yet to connect Eko Bridge are advised to use alternative routes such as Third-Mainland Bridge and Carter Bridge.
“Emergency Responding Agencies like Fire Service, LASEMA, LASTMA are all on ground.”
The emergency workers have also urged traders trying to salvage their goods from under the bridge to leave for their safety.
