Planned Protest: Threats won’t work, Falana tells Govt

Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer, has warned the Federal Government not to threaten the organisers of a planned nationwide protest over the country’s difficult economic conditions.

The demonstration, scheduled for next month, has been the subject of numerous hashtags on social media. While the Federal Government and security services have warned against the rallies, Falana says threats will not help to put an end to the protest.

“How do you identify those who are issuing statements; those who are planning the protest, and then engage with them productively?” Falana enquired on Tuesday’s episode of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“However, threats do not work. Indeed, on occasion, the government’s desperation can help to popularise such protests.

On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu requested that the planned protest be called off.

“Mr. President sees no necessity for the planned demonstration. He has asked them to abandon that strategy. “He’s asked them to wait for the government’s response to all of their requests,” said Minister of Information Mohammed Idris at the State House in Abuja.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun also issued a warning about the rally, suggesting it could turn violent.

However, Falana is requesting that the Federal Government identify the leaders of the planned protest and engage in dialogue with them rather than issuing threats.

“So, this time, the government should endeavour to identify and engage the movement’s leaders before raising issues. There are demands being made, and the government should respond,” the famous legal practitioner stated.

“There is still a long way between now and August 1st, and I understand the administration will address the public. It is also necessary for governors to come out and tell the public what they are doing to solve the country’s difficulties, which no one denies.”
