Following the tragic Christmas Eve incident that resulted in the loss of over 200 lives across two local government areas in Plateau State, Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, has affirmed substantial advancements by the Nigerian military in apprehending individuals associated with the attacks.

Musa conveyed this information in a televised interview on Channels TV on Monday, emphasizing that ongoing efforts are being made to apprehend all individuals implicated in the reprehensible act.

“We are up on their heels and making some arrests,” Gen Musa declared.

The Chief of Defence Staff also revealed that the military is working in conjunction with state governments to pinpoint areas seized by terrorists nationwide, aiming to recapture those territories.

He affirmed his commitment to ensuring that bandits do not retain control over any community in the new year.

“We are working with the state governments to identify these areas; this year, God willing, we will make sure bandits hold no community.” He affirmed.

Musa highlighted the possibility of reducing internally displaced camps as communities are reclaimed, enabling residents to return securely to their homes.

In response to concerns about the military’s response time, Gen. Musa acknowledged the extensive nature of the affected region, stating, “We cannot be everywhere.”

He emphasized ongoing efforts to improve reaction times and avert future incidents.

Identifying a lack of political will at all government levels as a major obstacle to resolving the prevailing insecurity, he underscored the crucial role of political decisions in overcoming challenges. The effectiveness of the military, he added, depends on robust support and directives from the political class.

“The military can only do so much; it is a political decision, not a military decision on what is to be done,” Gen Musa concluded.
