The death toll from a multiple-vehicle crash along Hawan Kibo Road in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has risen to 21.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, disclosed the latest figure on Saturday after inspecting the scene with the Zonal Commanding Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Joseph Udoabba.
The crash occurred on Friday evening when a truck reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into other vehicles travelling towards Jos.
The accident involved a truck, a Hummer bus and a motorcycle.
The Hummer bus caught fire following the impact, trapping several victims inside the vehicle.
Ogungbemi and Udoabba inspected the crash scene and assessed the extent of damage caused by the collision.
The FRSC officials urged motorists to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained to reduce the risk of road crashes.
They particularly advised vehicle owners to regularly inspect critical components, including braking systems, which are essential to vehicle safety.
The FRSC has continued to manage traffic around the scene while facilitating the removal of the damaged vehicles and recovery of victims.
The latest incident has again raised concerns over the safety of major highways, where vehicle defects, speeding and other factors continue to contribute to fatal crashes.
