Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has signed an executive order suspending all mining activities in the state with immediate effect.
The governor stated that the measure aims to protect mining areas while a newly inaugurated technical committee assesses those licensed to conduct mining operations.
He cited rising illegal mining activities and associated security threats across local government areas as key reasons for the suspension.
“There has been an increase in illegal mining activities and a growing influx of foreigners into mining areas, leading to heightened insecurity, including cases of rape, banditry, illegal firearms possession, drug-related crimes, and kidnapping,” he said.
Governor Mutfwang further stated that the state government will collaborate with the federal government to establish appropriate monitoring frameworks between the state, local governments, host communities, and mineral rights holders.
Additionally, the state will conduct a comprehensive security review of all mining areas to ensure that mineral rights holders contribute meaningfully to community development.
The executive order takes effect from 21st February 2025.
