Police authorities in Anambra have arrested a couple, Kingsley Okoye and Chidinma Okoye, for allegedly sending threatening messages and attempting to kidnap unsuspecting individuals.
The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed this in a statement on Friday.
According to Ikenga, the couple specialises in issuing abduction threats via text messages, demanding ransoms under the threat of abduction or murder.
“The Anambra State Police Command is aware of, and actively investigating, a related recent trending voice note detailing how a victim escaped an attempted abduction by an alleged security operative,” the statement read.
Arrest and Confession
The suspects were apprehended on Friday by a joint security team comprising police officers and vigilante operatives, acting on technology-driven intelligence.
Reports indicate that the suspects have confessed to the crimes and admitted to destroying several SIM cards previously used in their illicit activities.
“Acting on information regarding threats of abduction and ransom demands sent to unsuspecting members of the public, the Joint Security Force arrested a couple, Mr Kingsley Okoye, aged 36, and Mrs Chidinma Okoye, aged 27, in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. Phones and SIM cards were recovered during the operation,” Ikenga stated.
“The couple specialises in sending threatening messages and demanding ransoms, with threats of abduction or murder. Both suspects have admitted to their involvement and confessed to destroying SIM cards used to commit the crimes.”
Further Actions
The state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the command’s anti-kidnapping and robbery squad for thorough investigation.
He assured that the accused will face charges in court upon the conclusion of the investigations.
