The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Dike Micheal, over a road crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old student near the main entrance of Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri.
The accident happened at about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026. The deceased, Chibuike Friday, an indigene of Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, died from injuries sustained in the crash, while another victim, Bright Ukwuoma, was injured. Footage of the incident later circulated widely on social media.
Police said preliminary findings indicate that Micheal, who is from Umuolowu, Ejemekuru in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, was driving a Lexus ES 350 at high speed and was allegedly involved in an illegal street race when he struck Friday as he attempted to cross the road.
Investigators said the impact caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which then hit Ukwuoma, leaving him with injuries.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said officers from the Orji Police Division responded promptly to a distress call, rescued the suspect from an angry crowd and took him into custody.
Both victims were taken to hospital, where Friday was confirmed dead, while Ukwuoma is receiving medical treatment. The deceased’s remains have been deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, condemned the alleged reckless driving that led to the fatal crash. He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, wished the injured victim a speedy recovery and assured residents that justice would be served.
Bosso also directed the state traffic department to carry out a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, adding that the suspect would be prosecuted if found culpable after investigations are concluded.
He further urged motorists to avoid speeding, reckless driving and other traffic offences, stressing the importance of obeying road safety regulations. The police commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, enforcing traffic laws and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.
