The Edo State Police Command has apprehended an ex-convict for armed robbery, just two days after his release from prison.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command’s Spokesman, Superintendent of Police Moses Yamu, revealed that the suspect was arrested following a distress call during a robbery at a church in Benin City.
Details of the Arrest
The incident occurred on Sunday, 22 December, at the Restoration Gospel Ministry located at No. 11 Oviasuyi Street, off Ogiemwenke in Benin City.
“Upon receiving a distress call at about 11:45 am, operatives from Saint Saviour Divisional Headquarters swiftly mobilised to the scene. One suspect, 35-year-old John Agbontean, was arrested with a cut-to-size gun while attempting to rob the church,” Yamu stated.
Suspect’s Confession
During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being an ex-convict who had been released from Oko Prison, Benin City, on 19 December 2024.
He further admitted to conspiring with an accomplice, identified only as Ola, to rob the church of proceeds from its end-of-year harvest thanksgiving. While Agbontean was apprehended during the robbery, his accomplice managed to escape and is currently at large.
Police Action and Investigation
The police have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspect and are intensifying efforts to bring him to justice.
Superintendent Yamu confirmed that the weapon used in the attempted robbery had been recovered, and investigations are ongoing to ensure the culprits face the law.
This incident underscores the Edo State Police Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents during the festive season.
