Police operatives have arrested two suspected gunrunners and seized a cache of weapons during an operation in Katsina State.

Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed the development in a statement on Monday. He said officers attached to the Katsina State Command, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted the suspects along the Ingawa–Karkarku village road at about 4:35 a.m.

The suspects, identified as Abdussalam Muhammed, 25, and Aminu Mamman, 23, both from Baure village in Safana Local Government Area, were travelling in a blue Volkswagen Golf car with registration number RSH-528 BV when they were stopped.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1,063 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 ammunition and 232 rounds of 7.62x69mm PKT ammunition concealed inside.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the arms were being transported from Hadejia in Jigawa State to Safana in Katsina State for distribution to criminal groups operating in the region.

The suspects remain in custody as investigators trace the source of the weapons, their intended recipients and wider criminal links.

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun commended the officers for their swift action and urged them to maintain the momentum. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to dismantling organised criminal networks nationwide and appealed to the public for timely and credible information to aid security operations.
