The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a one-day-old baby abandoned near Crush Rock, behind the uncompleted Red Bricks Market in Mpape, and arrested the mother, Khadija Ali.
In a statement on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that the baby was discovered on Friday around 10:00 am by officers from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section (JWC) following a distress call. The infant, wrapped in cloth, was taken to Mpape Primary Health Care Centre, where medical evaluation confirmed the baby was in stable condition.
Following a tip-off from the community, Khadija Ali was apprehended. During interrogation, she admitted to abandoning the baby, citing her inability to care for the child due to her husband’s abandonment.
The police condemned the act of child abandonment and assured the public of their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals. The rescued baby will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while the mother faces prosecution under the Child Rights Act 2003 upon completion of investigations.
The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities via its emergency lines.
