Police arrest pregnant woman leading oil bunkering syndicate, seven others

Police operatives have arrested an eight-month-pregnant woman, identified as the leader of an oil bunkering syndicate, along with her husband and six others, for alleged illegal oil bunkering activities in the South-East.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed that the suspects were apprehended on July 4. Although the exact state was not specified, Adejobi noted that the suspects were involved in aiding and abetting an organized syndicate specializing in tampering with oil pipelines and theft.

“On July 4, 2024, personnel of the Taskforce attached to the South-East Surveillance intercepted three wooden boats loaded with 160 sacks of petroleum product suspected to have been illicitly acquired. During the operation, two suspects, Peace Moweeloh and Goodness Michael Chidinma, were apprehended,” Adejobi stated.

The arrests were made by the Inspector-General of Police Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering. Preliminary investigations led to the arrest of two additional suspects: Alh Yerima Adamu and Igboke Banks Ude.

Among those arrested is an eight-month-pregnant woman, the syndicate leader, and her husband. The suspects confessed to their involvement in aiding and abetting the organized syndicate that specializes in tampering with oil pipelines and theft. The case has been filed, and all four suspects have been remanded in prison.

Adejobi highlighted the Inspector-General of Police’s efforts to enhance the anti-oil theft activities of the Nigeria Police Force, noting significant support for the Nigerian Navy via the NPF Marine Unit. Additionally, the purchase of 20 more boats for the marine unit is expected soon.
