Two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, have been taken into custody by the police for their alleged roles in a conspiracy and the rape of a 20-year-old female student at the institution.
The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Olusola Ayanlade, confirmed the development in a statement released on Tuesday in Akure.
According to him, “Preliminary investigation reveals that the victim was invited to the residence of her long-time friend, Queen Sodo ‘f’, 19 years old, also a student of the same school.”
Providing further insight into the incident, the police PRO stated: “Trusting in the longevity of their friendship, which began in secondary school and continued into university, the victim accepted a drink provided by her friend, which was later found to have been laced with drugs, causing her to lose consciousness.
“Observing that the victim had become incapacitated, Queen Sodo reportedly cleverly left the room, summoned her male co-conspirator, and kept watch while the crime was being committed.”
He added that the disturbance from the victim drew the attention of a neighbour.
“The victim was subsequently rescued by a neighbour who noticed unusual and inconsistent noise from her neighbor’s room.
“She was found naked, unconscious, and in a compromising position with the arrested male suspect, and was immediately taken for urgent medical attention.
“Following preliminary assessment, she was referred to a specialist hospital for further medical treatment, where she is currently receiving care and recuperating.”
Ayanlade noted that both suspects have admitted to their participation and the roles each played in the incident.
He also revealed that evidence, including the bottle containing the drug-laced drink identified by the victim and the suspects, was recovered from the scene.
He stated that the suspects are in lawful custody and will be transferred to the Gender Desk Office in Akure for further investigation and prosecution.
Ayanlade assured the public that anyone involved in criminal activities in the state will be tracked down and held accountable under the law.
