Police blockade slows FCT poll in Kubwa as turnout remains low

Police officers enforced movement restrictions during the FCT council elections in Kubwa on Saturday, shutting down the busy Liberty Junction, a major link connecting different parts of the area.

Although a number of shops stayed open and commercial motorcyclists continued operations, the roadblock limited wider movement within the community.

At the polling unit located at Liberty Junction, Guinness Depot, which has 987 registered voters, only 36 people had completed accreditation and voting as of 11 a.m., though more residents gradually began to show up.

Party agents were also observed around Polling Unit 024 at Arab Road, Water Board Junction — a divided unit with 1,067 and 1,082 registered voters. By 11:30 a.m., accreditation figures stood at 46 and 40 voters respectively, according to details displayed on the BVAS devices.

Some election officials experienced difficulties due to low battery levels on their devices, leading a few voters to provide power banks to keep the machines running.

One electoral officer, who chose not to reveal his identity, remarked that “the turn-out not so impressive.”
