The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the kidnapping of Rev. Fr. John Otache, who serves at St. Margaret’s Parish in Ajegbe-Awume, Ohimini Local Government Area.

The police spokesperson, DSP Aondogu Orchia, confirmed the incident in Makurdi on Friday, saying security operatives had begun investigating the abduction and were working to secure the priest’s release.

The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo also confirmed the incident, stating that Otache was kidnapped on October 13.

In a statement signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the diocese explained that the priest was travelling back from Otukpo when he was intercepted by his abductors along the Otobi Amejo-Ajegbe Road in Ohimini Local Government Area.

The diocese expressed concern over the incident, adding that the Bishop of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, was deeply saddened by the priest’s abduction.

It called on priests, members of religious communities, church members and other concerned individuals to pray for Otache’s safe return.

The diocese also appealed for prayers for other people being held captive by kidnappers across the country, expressing hope that they would regain their freedom safely.
