Police dismiss online cult clash report in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has refuted an online report alleging that suspected cultists attacked several communities in Abeokuta and killed at least two people.

The report, which claimed that rival cult clashes erupted in Aregbe, Somorin, Anobi, and Alogi, was dismissed as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, described the publication as “fabricated” and “inaccurate.”

“The attention of the Ogun State Police Command has been drawn to a mischievous and misleading publication circulating on an obscure blog,” the statement read. “The story is riddled with falsehood, fictional claims, and inaccurate dates. While we would ordinarily ignore such attention-seeking reports, it is important to set the record straight to prevent panic in our communities.”

The police emphasised that cult-related incidents in the state had been drastically curtailed through intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and proactive security measures.

Odutola added that security forces recently arrested more than 22 suspected cultists in coordinated operations across Ogun State. She further noted that the 7 July anniversary of the Neo Black Movement — often feared for cult clashes — passed peacefully due to heightened police presence.

The command confirmed that suspects found guilty of cult-related crimes had been prosecuted and jailed, and that traditional rulers had commended the force’s efforts.

“The public should disregard the fabricated tale of widespread cult violence,” Odutola urged. “Such alarmist reports threaten public peace. Residents are encouraged to go about their lawful businesses, as the police remain fully committed to protecting lives and property.”
