Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas’ sister, Atsi Kefas, was reportedly shot by a police escort during an attack by gunmen on Thursday.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, Jumai, the governor’s mother and Atsi were driving along Kente road in Wukari LGA of Taraba state when they were attacked.

The publication stated that a police officer assigned to escort the family “accidentally shot Atsi” while attempting to fend off the assailants.

Following the attack, troops rescued the victims and evacuated both Jumai and Atsi Kefas from the scene with the use of an air ambulance.

The development was confirmed by the Taraba State Police Command on Friday morning.

Speaking to journalists in Jalingo on Friday morning, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Usman, confirmed that a robbery attack took place on the Wukari-Kente road but refrained from verifying whether the Governor’s mother, Jumai Kefas, and sister were among the victims.

Usman stated that investigations into the incident were ongoing and assured that the perpetrators of the robbery would be brought to justice.

“Yes, we received a report of a robbery attack on Wukari -Kente road in the early hours of yesterday, but I can’t confirm whether the Governor’s mother and sister were among the victims.

“The said incident is being investigated and hopefully the perpetrators of the act will be brought to book. The people of Taraba should remain calm, as the police and other sister agencies are on top of the security situation in the state,” he said.
