Joint Security Forces, consisting of the Police, Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies, are actively pursuing arsonists and members of an armed secessionist group responsible for attacking the Umunze Police Station in Anambra State early Monday morning.
During the operation, the security team recovered five unexploded improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement shared with Channels Television. He stated that the armed group stormed the police station, using improvised explosives and firing sporadically, causing part of the station to catch fire.
“Tragically, two police operatives on duty, while attempting to repel the attackers and prevent further damage, lost their lives in the line of duty,” the statement revealed. Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue.
Ikenga further noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the scene to assess the situation and reinforce security measures.
The Commissioner urged the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation, assuring that all information would be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
