The Abia State Police Command says it is pursuing community youths allegedly linked to an attempted attack on police officers and facilities in Akwete, while also responding to a viral video on social media alleging misconduct and misuse of firearms by officers.

In a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, the Command dismissed the allegations in the viral video, saying they misrepresented the actual events.

“The Command categorically states that the claims are false and do not reflect the true circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement said.

According to the police, officers attached to the Akwete Divisional Headquarters acted on intelligence to arrest one Chidi Stanley of Obiohuru, Akwete, over a domestic dispute that allegedly resulted in the death of his eight-year-old daughter.

The Command alleged that the suspect threw a stone during a confrontation with his sister, which accidentally struck the child, identified as Miss Chiamaka Stanley. The girl was later confirmed dead at a hospital.

Police further stated that the family allegedly failed to inform authorities about the death and instead began burial arrangements without notifying the police.

The officers were said to have visited the location after receiving intelligence, where they documented the scene, including a prepared grave, and requested access to the body. However, some family members and youths in the area reportedly resisted the officers.

“The family, supported by some youths of the community, resisted police intervention and denied access, creating a tense and potentially violent situation,” the statement said.

The Command added that the matter was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation after discussions with community leaders.

Police said some youths later became hostile and allegedly attempted to attack officers and the police station despite repeated appeals for peace.

“Officers were compelled to defend themselves, protect police property, and prevent further breakdown of law and order,” the statement added.

Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, warned against attacks on officers carrying out lawful duties and said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the attempted attack.

He also appealed to residents to support police investigations and avoid spreading unverified information or engaging in acts capable of disrupting public peace.
