The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody a 26-year-old man, Chibuike Anikpe, in connection with the alleged killing of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Ogochukwu Mmadubugwu, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Awka.
According to Ikenga, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka carried out the arrest on January 7.
He dismissed as untrue the rumours suggesting that the killing was carried out by individuals to whom the suspect was indebted.
The police spokesperson stated that during questioning, the suspect admitted to stabbing the deceased in the neck with a knife, an attack that resulted in her death.
He further explained that the incident took place on December 9, 2025.
Ikenga said the suspect acknowledged that the act was driven by suspicions that the victim was unfaithful.
He added that the suspect claimed he had made significant financial investments in the victim, which allegedly left him bankrupt and emotionally troubled, ultimately leading to the killing.
The spokesperson also disclosed that the suspect admitted to planting a fake letter alleging that he had been kidnapped by creditors in an attempt to divert suspicion.
Ikenga noted that investigators, as part of ongoing procedures, have visited the morgue where the victim’s body was kept.
He added that the incident has generated widespread anger and reignited discussions on domestic violence and crimes arising from intimate relationships within the community.
“The Command therefore urged the public to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies.”
Ikenga concluded that the suspect would be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
