The Kano State Police Command has apprehended the wife and several associates of Ahmad Adam Abba, a suspected Chadian terrorist wanted for the killing of 17 people in his home country.
The arrests were carried out on the eve of the National Tijjaniyya Maulud ceremony, which took place last week at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
Addressing journalists in Kano on Friday, Commissioner of Police Salman Garba disclosed that Abba, who is still at large, had intended to establish a terrorist base within the state.
“The wanted Chadian suspected terrorist escaped out of Nigeria, and we have successfully apprehended three of his associates, including his wife, another Chadian named Jibrin Mohammed, 42 years old, and a Nigerian,” Garba stated.
He disclosed that intelligence-led policing had led to the discovery of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), which were recovered during the operation.
“Acting on one of the intelligence reports, IEDs were recovered, and discreet investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Garba reassured residents that security agencies were working tirelessly to prevent any threats in Kano.
“Our teams are collaborating closely with other intelligence agencies and the communities to ensure that we are working hand-in-hand to identify any suspicious activities and individuals who may pose a security threat to our society,” he added.
The commissioner also emphasised the importance of public cooperation in intelligence gathering, urging residents to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
“It is vital that we foster trust and cooperation between the police and the communities we serve, as this partnership is essential in combating crime and preventing likely emerging security threats,” he noted.
He further stated that patrols and surveillance had been intensified in areas known to be vulnerable to criminal activities.
In addition, Garba said the police command, through its public relations unit, would continue conducting awareness programs to educate the public on security matters.
“Our commitment to ensuring the safety of the people of Kano remains unwavering. We encourage residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements promptly,” he concluded.
The police command assured the public that investigations were ongoing and that efforts were being intensified to track down Abba and his accomplices.
