Police pick date for nationwide enforcement of e-Motor Registry

The Nigeria Police Force is set to begin enforcing the digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) within the next 14 days, starting on July 29, 2024.

According to the police, this initiative aims to rejuvenate and digitalize the motor vehicle registration system, significantly enhancing the nation’s safety and security framework.

A statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi described the e-CMR as an advanced, real-time online repository of motor vehicle data. This system is designed to aid police investigations, support operational activities, and combat vehicle-related crimes, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

The shift to a digitalized system will streamline the documentation and verification processes for vehicle ownership and related transactions.

The statement also noted that, following directives from the IGP, services such as change of ownership, change of license number, change of engine, and change of chassis/body will become more seamless. The e-CMR system will ensure the validation of vehicle authenticity and ownership, improve the tracking and recovery of stolen vehicles, and prevent the purchase of stolen vehicles by unsuspecting buyers.
