The Delta State Police Command has opened an investigation into the death of Mr Unity Adeda, a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Secondary Education, following the arrest of one person in connection with the incident.
The probe was launched after a complaint alleged that Adeda was beaten during an incident at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu, in Asaba.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, three aides attached to the commissioner were mentioned in the complaint as allegedly being involved in the incident.
They were identified as Enos Attah, Oputa Okestine and Lucky Adoh. Edafe said Adoh had been arrested, while efforts were being made to locate and apprehend the other two suspects.
Edafe disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Erale, had ordered the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death.
He explained that investigators would review available evidence, including video recordings, eyewitness accounts and medical records, to determine exactly what happened.
The police spokesman added that the conduct and actions of everyone connected to the incident would be examined before a decision is made on whether anyone should be held culpable.
Earle assured Adeda’s family that the investigation would be handled professionally and without interference.
He stated that anyone found culpable would face prosecution in line with the law, regardless of their status or position.
The police commissioner urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from drawing conclusions until the investigation is concluded.
He also expressed his condolences to Adeda’s family following his death.
