The Delta State Police Command has rescued a woman who was abducted from her residence in the Amukpe area of Sapele Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Warri on Friday.
Edafe said the woman was abducted on Wednesday after gunmen reportedly laid siege to the entrance of her residence.
According to him, the victim was attempting to drive into her compound when the hoodlums emerged and abducted her.
He said the kidnappers fired several shots into the air before taking the woman into a nearby bush.
“Upon receiving the report, the Sapele Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised patrol and surveillance teams to the scene, where expended AK-47 ammunition shells were recovered,” Edafe said.
He added that the police operatives, supported by local vigilantes, immediately launched an intensive search of the surrounding bushes in an effort to locate the victim.
The search operation continued throughout the night and into Thursday morning.
According to the police spokesman, the abductors abandoned the woman after sensing that security operatives were closing in on them.
“Sensing danger on Thursday morning, the abductors abandoned the victim and fled,” he said.
Edafe said the woman was rescued unhurt and had since been reunited with her family.
He added that efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Samuel Erale, commended the police operatives and local vigilantes for their roles in securing the victim’s release.
Earle restated the command’s determination to sustain intelligence-led operations and decisive action against kidnappers, cultists and other criminal elements across the state.
He also assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing and tackling crime.
