Police officers were seen at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday as both Samuel Anyanwu, the embattled National Secretary, and Ude Okoye, whom the Court of Appeal declared the legitimate National Secretary, were expected to resume duties.
A correspondent on-site noted that tensions were high, with the potential for drama as both individuals arrived to claim the office of National Secretary.
Supporters of both Anyanwu and Okoye gathered at the party’s headquarters, while police maintained a minimal presence to ensure order.
Anyanwu entered the premises amidst cheers from his supporters and proceeded directly to his office. Once there, he called for prayers before addressing journalists.
When questioned about the court ruling in favor of Okoye, Anyanwu stated that the case has been appealed and is now pending at the Supreme Court.
Regarding the party’s announcement last week recognizing Okoye as National Secretary, Anyanwu dismissed the statement made by the National Publicity Secretary as a personal opinion.
The dispute stems from Anyanwu’s decision to vacate his position to contest the Imo State governorship election, which he lost to the incumbent.
During his absence, Okoye assumed the role of National Secretary, later challenging Anyanwu’s return.
The Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Okoye, and the PDP’s National Working Committee acknowledged him as the legally recognized National Secretary, emphasizing their respect for the judiciary’s decision.
