The Ondo State Police Command has stopped an attempted child marriage in Idoani, Ose Local Government Area, after receiving a tip-off from a community leader.

In a statement signed by DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, Police Public Relations Officer, on behalf of CP Adebowale Lawal, the Command confirmed the rescue operation.

The statement revealed that a 15-year-old girl was on the verge of being married to 52-year-old Asere Sunday, popularly known as “Santo.”

Officers promptly intervened, rescuing the minor and arresting the alleged groom, his son, Asere Kehinde, 22, and the victim’s father, Ayoola Sunday. The girl was then taken to the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, for medical attention.

Investigations showed that the suspect allegedly gave money to the girl’s father in exchange for arranging the marriage.

The police added that the father confessed financial hardship pushed him into the decision, while local youths had already mobilised to resist the marriage before police arrived.

CP Lawal reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse and gender-based violence, urging parents and community leaders to safeguard children and avoid jeopardising their future due to poverty.
