The Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of Chukwuma Obi, a 32-year-old man from Umuagu Village in Igboukwu, Aguata Local Government Area, over allegations of attempted kidnapping and extortion.

In a statement by the police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrest was carried out on Tuesday by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugu-Ukwu.

The suspect is accused of threatening abduction while demanding a ransom of ₦1.2 million.

“The victim reported receiving a menacing message from an individual claiming to be a member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), threatening abduction unless the demanded ransom was paid into a specified account.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and is currently assisting the Police in identifying and apprehending other members of the gang involved in the criminal activities,” the statement said.

The police statement noted that Obi’s arrest follows a similar case last month, in which the Command apprehended a couple involved in sending threatening messages and extorting victims under the pretense of planned abductions.

According to the police, the couple confessed to their crimes and admitted to destroying SIM cards used in their illicit operations.

Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to thoroughly investigating all cases to ensure suspects are brought to justice. He emphasized that such measures are crucial to curbing criminal activities and safeguarding the lives and property of residents.
