The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning to groups planning to protest for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, cautioning them against staging any demonstration around Aso Rock and its surrounding areas.

According to a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in Abuja, the warning comes in line with a Federal High Court order issued in the case of Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others on Oct. 17.

“The order restrains the respondents and any other persons or groups acting under their instruction from staging protests within and around Aso Rock Villa and its environs,” he said.

The restricted areas also include the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.

Hundeyin emphasized that all intending protesters and counter-groups must steer clear of these locations and avoid any conduct that could incite confrontation or disrupt public order.

He assured that the police would maintain traffic flow, protect lives and property, and ensure the safety of all law-abiding citizens.

He further warned that anyone who uses the protest as a cover to promote violence, carry weapons, damage property, kidnap, or engage in acts that could cause serious injury or loss of life would face decisive action. Offenders will be arrested, fully investigated, and prosecuted under applicable criminal laws, including those related to public order, violent conduct, and terrorism where necessary.

Hundeyin added that individuals who incite unrest through social media or other platforms would also be tracked and prosecuted using digital evidence.

He noted that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT and other relevant commands to enforce the court order strictly, with strategic deployments across sensitive locations to maintain calm and security.

Organisers and participants were advised to avoid restricted zones, refrain from carrying weapons or engaging in provocative acts, and instead pursue their grievances through the courts or other lawful channels.

Hundeyin concluded by assuring residents that adequate security measures are in place and urged those not involved in the protest to continue their lawful activities without fear, warning that anyone who defies the court order will be arrested and prosecuted.
