Former President Goodluck Jonathan has assured Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, not to be disheartened by the ongoing political turmoil in the state.
Jonathan made this statement during an event in Nihi Community, located in the Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Sunday.
He expressed confidence that Fubara would emerge as a “general in politics” despite the challenges he is currently facing.
“I understand that you (Fubara) are going through challenges, and on occasions like this, I usually prefer to remain silent. I don’t like to say too much,” Jonathan remarked.
“But this is your first time holding a significant political office. You will face many trials, but remember, no one becomes a general without fighting battles.
“Whatever difficulties you are encountering now are preparing you to become a general in politics. With your unwavering dedication and the support I have observed from the people of Rivers State, God will surely see you through.”
Importance of Stability in Rivers State
Jonathan emphasised the pivotal role that Rivers State plays within the Niger Delta region and warned that instability in the state could have far-reaching consequences for the entire country.
“We need a peaceful Rivers State because it is the heart of the Niger Delta. I often stress this point: creating serious disturbances in Rivers State will inevitably create a crisis in the Niger Delta, which is detrimental to the economy of our nation.
“We desire peace in Rivers State. The governor should be allowed to carry out his duties without hindrance. Once his tenure is complete, someone else will take over.
“In politics, tenures are temporary. There’s no need to harm one another over political positions. Let those in office do their work, and afterwards, the political future will take its course,” he added.
Traditional Honour
During the event, the former president was conferred with the traditional title of Eze Udo 1 of Etche by the Supreme Council of Etche Traditional Rulers.
Both Jonathan and Fubara attended the occasion, which marked the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Eze Nwala, the Onye Ishi Agwuru III of Ulakwo-Umuselem in Etche.
