Portugal has experienced its hottest November on record, with the average air temperature 2.69 degrees Celsius higher than the 1981-2010 average, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The average temperature for the month was 15.14 degrees Celsius (59.3 Fahrenheit), making it the warmest November since the IPMA began recording data in 1931. “November has been the hottest month recorded,” an IPMA spokesperson told AFP.
The institute plans to release its full analysis for the month in the coming days.
Similar Trends in Spain
Earlier this week, Spain’s meteorological agency announced its warmest November on record, following deadly floods in October. Spain’s average temperature for November was 12.4 degrees Celsius (54.3 Fahrenheit), surpassing the previous record set in 1983 by 0.5 degrees Celsius.
Both Portugal and Spain experienced their second-hottest year on record in 2023.

As global temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, scientists warn that heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, and other extreme weather events are likely to become more frequent and severe.
