President Bola Tinubu did not extend the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, according to a statement from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Instead, the President approved the proper enforcement of the law governing the IGP’s term in office.

In a statement released on Friday, NPF spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that the IGP’s appointment is for a four-year term.

“The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to misleading reports regarding the tenure of the Inspector General of Police. We wish to categorically state that President Bola Tinubu did not grant a tenure extension, but rather applied the relevant legal provisions for the IGP’s term in office,” the statement read.

Contrary to reports circulating on social media and news platforms, Adejobi explained that an appointment letter dated November 3, 2023, confirmed by the Police Council, officially granted IGP Egbetokun a four-year tenure. This is in line with Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).

Adejobi emphasized that there is no need for the IGP to lobby for an extension since he has not yet completed the term outlined in his appointment letter. He dismissed the circulating misinformation as the work of individuals attempting to undermine the office and the IGP for personal gain.
