President Buhari, other world leaders, NewsClick Nigeria in attendance as COP27 officially opens today
The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly referred to as Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, or COP27, will officially commence today (Sunday) November 6 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
The Conference will last till Friday, November 18 2022.
President Muhammadu Buhari and other world leaders will grace the Conference in Egypt.
Recall that NewsClick Nigeria had earlier been accredited for the second consecutive year by the United Nations as media delegate for COP27. The medium was also accredited by the United Nations for the COP26 which held last year (2021) in Glasgow.
The President who is presently in United Kingdom on a routine medical check up has however directed the Minister of Environment, Barr. Mohammed Abdullahi to lead Nigeria’s delegation to Conference.
Abdullahi is expected to represent the president at high-level sessions and also deliver Nigeria’s National Statement at COP27 plenary, attend bilaterals and side meetings on Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, amongst other engagements.
As chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Pan African Great Green Wall, he is expected to host a high-level meeting of member states on the GGW alongside the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the Pan African Great Green Wall (PAGGW).
A statement by the ministry’s head of press and public relations unit, Ibrahim Haruna said other ministers mandated to attend include Engr. Sulaiman Adamu (Water Resources), Dr. Mahmood Abubakar (Agriculture), Zainab Ahmed (Budget and Finance), Engr. Abubakar Aliyu (Power), Sadiya Farouq (Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development) and others.
