Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the impact of ongoing security challenges in Zamfara communities, which have disrupted agricultural activities and worsened hunger and poverty in the predominantly agrarian state.
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate made this known during a condolence visit to the Emir of Gusau and the people of Zamfara State in Gusau on Monday.
The visit came in the wake of military airstrikes in the Tungar Kara community of Maradun Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed about 16 lives.
Represented by Labour Party spokesperson Tanko Yunusa, Obi lamented the tragic loss of lives, emphasizing that those meant to be protected had become victims of the crisis.
Yunusa delivered Peter Obi’s condolence message to the Emir of Gusau, stating that Obi feels deeply connected to the plight of the people of Zamfara. He explained that this connection prompted Obi to send him to offer sympathies on his behalf, ahead of Obi’s planned personal visit.
Obi identified hunger and unemployment as key drivers of the insecurity plaguing Zamfara and the nation. He emphasized that prosperity fosters security and stressed the importance of returning to the nation’s foundational strength—production rather than consumption. According to Obi, prioritizing production is essential for tackling Nigeria’s challenges of insecurity, hunger, and unemployment.
The District Head of Tudun Wada Gusau, Bashir Danbaba, who received the condolence message on behalf of the Emir of Gusau, expressed gratitude to Obi for standing with the people of Zamfara during this difficult time.
