The Kano State Government has eased the curfew imposed following the violence that accompanied the #EndBadGovernance protests.
State Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, announced that the curfew would now be relaxed from 8 AM to 2 PM.
“After reviewing the situation and considering the difficulties faced by the people due to the curfew, His Excellency has directed that the curfew be relaxed from 8 AM to 2 PM starting tomorrow, Sunday, August 4,” Dantiye stated.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and properties of Kano residents, explaining that the initial 24-hour curfew was imposed for security reasons. The situation will continue to be monitored, and further adjustments to the curfew will be made as the security situation improves. He expressed hope that residents would comply with these measures.
Dantiye noted that the decision to relax the curfew was intended to allow people to carry out their daily activities during the permitted hours. He also conveyed the condolences of Governor Abba Yusuf to the families who lost loved ones and those who suffered property losses during the protests, which had been infiltrated by hoodlums.
The commissioner thanked the public for cooperating with the state government and adhering to its directives.
Governor Yusuf had imposed a 24-hour curfew on Thursday after nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests escalated into violence. The 10-day protest, which highlighted issues of bad governance and economic hardship, had led to attacks and looting of public and private properties in Kano. Among the affected properties was the newly constructed Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park, set ablaze by rioters. The ICT centre, scheduled for commissioning next week, saw youths looting desktop computers, chairs, keyboards, and other equipment.
The Kano police command reported that approximately 269 suspects were arrested for their involvement in the looting of public properties during the unrest.
